torches, flanking the Deacon who reads the Gospel
with torches, and adding color to the procession
during most seasons of the church year by carrying
one of the Cathedral’s several banners. Acolytes
also assist at the Altar by helping clergy and lay
ministers while they prepare and distribute Holy
Communion.
A number of famous people have served as acolytes
in the Episcopal Church, including former Secretary
of State Colin Powell and former President George H.
W. Bush.
Being an acolyte is a popular ministry at Grace Cathedral
because acolytes are at the center of the action with
important roles to play during our Worship services.
Dressed in white robes called “albs,” Cathedral Acolytes
perform a wide variety of duties designed to assist the
clergy and enhance the Worship experience for the
congregation. These include leading the choir and
clergy in the procession by carrying the Cross and
are assigned to one of two teams, which serve every
other week and on special occasions during Holy
Week, the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving. Acolytes
may also be called upon to serve at weddings,
funerals, ordinations and special Diocesan services.
If you are interested in joining this ministry, contact
Acolyte Director,
Kent Wingerson.
