GRACE EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL + TOPEKA, KANSAS
|
Welcome to the
Grace Cathedral Online Youth Community
|
From the beginning, we emphasized that
our journey to Canterbury would be a
pilgrimage, and our focus as a community
would be on making the trip as a spiritual
journey.
Medieval pilgrims usually traveled on foot or
horseback, often sleeping on beds of straw in
the yards of Inns or monasteries. As modern
pilgrims, we used a chartered school bus
between Grace Cathedral and the airport in
Kansas City, and once in Britain, we used
various forms of public transportation,
particularly the London Underground, the train
between London and Canterbury, and of
course, we walked almost everywhere else.
We stayed in youth
hostels, where we ate
most of our meals, and
slept in bunk beds
dormitory style, divided
by gender. The hostels
packed lunches and
breakfasts for us when
we wouldn’t be around at
mealtime. In order to
keep our focus as a
community, pilgrims
agreed to give up such
distractions as cell
phones and iPods for the
duration of the journey.
