ACTIVITIES
Make A Craft to Take Home!
In addition to the activities in the Gate exhibits and the Shuk, visitors will
have the opportunity to do a craft project to take home as a souvenir of
their visits. These may vary according to availability of materials, but are
planned to include:
- Hamsa A hand shaped religious object
used by both Jewish and Muslim people. Its
name comes from a Semitic root and
literally means "five". For Muslims, this is
said to represent the Five Pillars of Islam
and for Jews the five Books of the Torah.
Hamsas are used in necklaces and
bracelets, wall hangings, and other forms
of art.
- Sand Painting: This activity involves
pouring sand in a variety of colors onto a
sticky board to create a colorful picture of
Jerusalem.
- Mosaic: Mosaics are works of of tile or
stone laid out to form a picture or
elaborate design. The numerous
archaeological excavations in Israel
have uncovered many mosaics making
up walls or floors from different periods.
